This section is used to record every DHSW intervention in any setting.
An intervention is defined as contact with a family where a DHSW delivers:
- an oral health intervention (e.g. dietary advice, toothbrushing instruction or the delivery of a dental pack)
- An non-oral health intervention (where a family is supported to remove barriers to allow a future oral health intervention to happen).
- support to access dental services.
The Practice Intervention page requires all fields to be completed to save the intervention.

Action Taken
Dietary advice
During the intervention ‘yes’ should be selected when dietary advice has been delivered.
Toothbrushing instructions
During the intervention ‘yes’ should be selected when ‘Toothbrushing Instruction’ involves the demonstration and the brushing of a child’s teeth (by the parent or DHSW). Toothbrushing Instruction should only be selected if the DHSW or the child’s parent has actually brushed the child’s teeth.
Dental Pack Delivered
During the intervention ‘yes’ should be selected when a ‘Dental Pack Delivered’ has been provided or if a dental pack was subsequently posted to the family.
Non-Oral Health
During the intervention ‘yes’ should be selected if an non Childsmile intervention has taken place (perhaps linked to the adult priority groups) which has supported a family with signposting or initial support, it would be supportive for a follow-up Childsmile intervention to be arranged at this point.
Star Tool Used
During the intervention ‘yes’ should be selected if a toothbrushing brief intervention has been delivered as guided by the Star tool.
Navigating Support
During the intervention ‘yes’ should be selected if a family receives support with signposting or referral to another service. Multiple categories can be selected – choosing at least one is compulsory. The text box is for recording the full names of any initiative(s) to which the family is signposted and is also compulsory. Please provide the full name of initiatives (e.g. ‘Motherwell Locality Breastfeeding Support Group’ rather than ‘Breastfeeding group’.
Notes
The notes section should be used to capture an overview of the visit with details such as concerns raised by parents, focus areas and actions for follow up visit. If family are registered practice details could be included here.
Please note sensitive information should only be recorded into the ‘Notes’ box if it is relevant to Childsmile. Notes are for local use only and information contained within these boxes will not be viewed by Childsmile Data Monitoring teams on a regular basis.
There is a reminder at the bottom of the page to ensure that notes are copied into the child’s health visiting system, there may also be local protocols for notes to also be held within dental appointment systems.
