Childsmile at nursery and school

Childsmile is introduced at nursery and school, to ensure that children have access to toothbrushes and toothpaste but also to support the basic life skill and routine of toothbrushing. We also provide a clinical intervention to targeted establishments.

Two-year-old children receiving funded nursery places and all three and four-year-olds attending nursery (extended to some P1 and P2 classes in schools), are eligible to be offered:

  • free daily supervised toothbrushing within their nursery or school
  • free dental packs, which contain a toothbrush, toothpaste of at least 1000 parts per million (ppm) fluoride and oral health messages
  • oral health education for your child.

In some local authority nurseries, Childsmile teams will visit your child’s nursery and will:

  • talk to parents and carers about the programme and answer your questions
  • give you a fluoride varnish consent form (and help you to complete it)
  • apply fluoride varnish to teeth (twice a year)
  • advise you about caring for your child’s teeth at home.

The team make sure that as many children as possible benefit from being part of Childsmile. Find out more about consent and who you might meet from the Childsmile Team.

Sustainability

At Childsmile, we are keen to deliver our programmes in the most sustainable way, which is why we have developed our Recycle and Smile service to support nurseries and schools to recycle toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes.
