Oral health for 3 to 5 year olds

Your child will be on the way to having all 20 baby teeth and toothbrushing should be a twice-daily routine.

Now that your child is at nursery/school they will be discovering new food and drinks. It is important to think about how much sugar is in their meals and snacks. Encouraging toothbrushing and reducing the amount of sugar will prevent tooth decay.

  • At your child’s nursery the daily supervised Toothbrushing programme should be in place.
  • Targeted nurseries and schools in each health board offer an additional two applications of fluoride varnish per year.
  • When you visit your dentist your child should be offered fluoride varnish application at least twice-yearly.
  • For some children this means they will have four applications of fluoride varnish per year.
